The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev, celebrates the music of Felix Mendelssohn in a concert of Romantic music.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are at Usher Hall on Thursday 26 November, with a programme built around Felix Mendelssohn. They're calling it The Magic of Mendelssohn, and the whole evening is billed as unadulterated Romanticism — which is a fair way of saying it's a night of the big, melodic, sweeping stuff Mendelssohn is known for, rather than anything too avant-garde.
Maxim Emelyanychev is conducting, and he's bringing in a fair few guests for the night. Sir Stephen Hough is on piano, and there are three singers — Carolyn Sampson, Emma Morwood and Thomas Walker. With that many voices on stage, it's a good bet the evening will lean into Mendelssohn's choral and vocal writing as much as his orchestral work, rather than just sticking to the symphonies.
It's part of the SCO's 2026/27 season, which they've described as a celebration of the power of music to inspire, connect and transform. That season mixes core orchestral repertoire with bold contemporary music and community engagement, so this Mendelssohn night sits on the more traditional end of the scale — a proper Romantic evening in the middle of a season that's meant to pull in a few different directions.
