The Scottish Chamber Orchestra play Max Richter's Recomposed: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons, with violinist Mari Samuelsen play-directing, at the Usher Hall.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra bring the music of Max Richter to Usher Hall on Thursday 22 October, the first of two nights in Edinburgh. The main event is Recomposed: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons, with violinist Mari Samuelsen play-directing from the stage and David Brophy conducting.
If you're not familiar with the piece, it's exactly what the title suggests: Richter took Vivaldi's original Four Seasons and looped, shifted, and layered it until it became something entirely his own. It's a reimagining that keeps the structure of the original but fills it with his particular sound—minimalist, cinematic, and with a steady, pulsing energy that carries through all four seasons. Samuelsen takes the lead on violin, playing and directing at the same time, while the SCO provides the orchestral weight behind her.
Richter is a composer who works across minimalism, electronica and cinematic soundscapes, and he's spent much of his career reshaping contemporary classical music. Recomposed is one of his most recognisable works, and hearing it live with a full orchestra is a different experience from the record. The SCO's performance is part of their New Dimensions series for the 2026/27 season, a programme that puts their core repertoire alongside contemporary music and community work.
