The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, led by Rachel Podger, plays Handel, Vivaldi, Bach and Corelli for the festive season.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are back at The Queen's Hall on Thursday 17 December, with a programme of Baroque music led by director and violinist Rachel Podger. It's a festive set that pairs the big names you'll recognise with a few rarer pieces from the period, and Podger is returning to Edinburgh to lead the ensemble through it.
There's a fair bit of ground to cover in one evening. The programme opens with Handel's Concerto a due Cori No.2, and then moves into Locatelli's Concerto Grosso in F minor Op.1 No.8, known as the Christmas Concerto. From there it's Muffat's Sonata V from Armonico Tributo (Salzburg 1682), and Corelli's Concerto Grosso in G minor Op.6 No.8, which carries the subtitle fatto per la notte di Natale — made for Christmas Eve. Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in E, Il riposo per il Santissimo Natale, follows, and the night closes with JS Bach's Orchestral Suite No.4.
Between them, the set draws on the grandeur of Handel, the intimate charm of Corelli and the brilliance of Bach. Podger leads the orchestra from the violin, and the evening balances the festive favourites that usually crop up this time of year with some of the less-heard Baroque gems. The SCO describes it as marking the festive season in true Baroque splendour.
