Scottish Chamber Orchestra, led by Lorenza Borrani, celebrate spring with Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn and Schumann's 'Spring' Symphony.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are at The Queen's Hall on Thursday 25 March, with Lorenza Borrani leading from the first violin. It's a spring programme that pairs the music of Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn with Schumann's Spring Symphony, and it sits within the SCO's 2026/27 New Dimensions series.
The centrepiece is Fanny Mendelssohn's Das Jahr, a cycle built around the turning of the seasons. It's rarely heard in the concert hall, and this version is a vivid orchestration by Detlev Glanert. The orchestration itself was commissioned by the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, financed by the Friends of the Mozarteum Orchestra Association, and worked on by the SCO alongside the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. It's a good chance to hear her as a composer in her own right, with her own poetic depth and individuality on display.
Felix Mendelssohn's String Symphony No. 10 adds a different energy to the mix, with its youthful intensity and classical clarity. Then Schumann's Spring Symphony brings the evening to a close, a work that lives up to its name with its optimism, energy and warmth. The whole thing is billed as a celebration of spring and renewal, and the programme follows that through from the Mendelssohns to the Schumann.
