The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and string quartet Brooklyn Rider, conducted by Geoffrey Paterson, with the world premiere of Nico Muhly's Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are pairing up with the New York string quartet Brooklyn Rider at The Queen's Hall on Thursday 28 January 2027. It's the second instalment of the SCO's New Dimensions series, and the two are sharing the stage for a programme they describe as bold, with music of intensity, innovation and edge. Geoffrey Paterson conducts.
The centrepiece is the world premiere of Nico Muhly's Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra, written especially with Brooklyn Rider in mind. It's a new work, so this is the first time it'll be heard live. Beside it sits Jonny Greenwood's Water, a piece that blurs the boundaries between rock and classical, and Missy Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres). The older half of the bill brings in Berg's Lyric Suite and Ligeti's Melodien, so the night moves from the 20th century through to the present.
Brooklyn Rider are known as a genre-defying quartet, and this pairing puts them front and centre rather than tucked into the orchestral texture. The New Dimensions series is built around these kinds of collaborations, and this one brings together a full chamber orchestra and a small string ensemble on the same bill. The programme is a mix of established names and new material, with the Muhly premiere as the main draw.
