An evening of Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto and Adagio, performed by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Ryan Bancroft conducting and Clara-Jumi Kang on violin.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are at The Queen's Hall on Thursday 29 October, with Ryan Bancroft conducting and Clara-Jumi Kang on violin. It's part of their New Dimensions series for the 2026/27 season, and the evening centres on two of Samuel Barber's most powerful works.
Kang takes the lead on the Violin Concerto, and the orchestra follows it with Barber's Adagio — a piece that's become a bit of a cultural touchstone through its use in film moments like Platoon and The Elephant Man. Those two sit at the heart of the bill, and they're framed by two very different pieces. Schulhoff's Suite for Chamber Orchestra opens the night with its jazz-tinged sound, and Kurt Weill's Symphony No. 2 closes it, a darkly brilliant work that stands in sharp contrast to the intimacy of Barber's music. Between the jazz influence at the start and the weight of the Weill at the end, the Barber pieces hold the middle ground.
The Queen's Hall on Clerk Street is a 900-capacity venue that's been around since 1823, when it was built as Hope Park Chapel. It was converted to its current role in 1979 and formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II. These days it stages a wide range of classical, jazz, blues, pop, rock, world, folk and comedy, and hosts events for the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival during the summer.
