The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, led by music director Thomas Søndergård, plays Elgar's First Symphony, Schumann's Piano Concerto with Anna Vinnitskaya and a work by Dorothy Howell.
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra are at Usher Hall on Friday 13 November, part of their 2026-27 season. Music Director Thomas Søndergård is leading the orchestra through a programme that opens with Elgar's First Symphony, which the RSNO describe as beginning with 'one of the greatest tunes ever written by a British composer' and pulsing with the energy, colour and emotion of life itself. It's a big, sweeping piece of British music, and it's the one that sets the tone for the night.
Following that is Schumann's Piano Concerto, with Anna Vinnitskaya on the piano. It's a romantic, lyrical work, and having a soloist take the lead shifts the focus from the full orchestral sound of the Elgar to something more intimate. The evening closes with a piece by the British composer Dorothy Howell, which the RSNO describe as a tale of forbidden love.
Between the three, you've got a broad sweep of the repertoire: a cornerstone of the British symphonic tradition, a romantic concerto, and a smaller, narrative work. It's a good mix of the familiar and the less-heard, and it's all under Søndergård's baton.
