A co-production of Shakespeare's tragic tale of forbidden love, directed by Chelsea Walker, presented at the Royal Lyceum Theatre.
Romeo & Juliet opens at the Royal Lyceum Theatre on Saturday 30 January, running through to Saturday 27 February. It's Shakespeare's lovesick tragedy: two teenagers fall madly in love while their families tear each other apart, an explosive and urgent tale of forbidden love, secrets, loyalty and grief. The production is directed by Chelsea Walker, with William Shakespeare as writer, and it's a co-production between the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, ETT, Leeds Playhouse and Nottingham Playhouse.
The staging leans on two of the play's most famous lines: 'Then I defy you, stars!' and 'These violent delights have violent ends.' Both are among the most recognisable moments in the story, and they set the tone for the production's focus on the collision between the young couple's passion and the wider conflict that eventually breaks them. It's a story that doesn't lose its pull, no matter how many times it's been done.
