Live version of the BBC show in which teams race on foot through Edinburgh's West End, Old Town and closes, solving escape-room-style puzzles guided by WhatsApp clues.
Race Across the World: The Experience is running at Shandwick Place in Edinburgh through 30 December, the official live version of the BBC show. It turns the city into a playing field where every street hides a clue and every turn leads to a new challenge, so if you've spent your life walking these streets, this is your chance to see them as a game board.
You race on foot across three legs, covering between 3.3 and 4.2 kilometres through the West End, the Old Town and the city's historic closes. There's no public transport allowed, so you're doing the whole thing on your own two feet. Clues arrive via WhatsApp, guiding you to checkpoints where you'll solve escape-room-style physical puzzles, make route choices and manage an in-game budget. Every virtual penny you spend affects your final score and your place on the all-time leaderboard, so how you spend counts as much as how fast you move.
The timer pauses at the checkpoints, which gives you a moment to stop and catch your breath before the next leg. The race ends when you sign the guest book. The experience changes in every city, with new puzzles, characters and routes, and the Edinburgh edition is described as a way to see parts of the city you wouldn't normally find. It's as much about the route as the puzzles, taking you through the West End, the Old Town and the closes that usually just form the background of a walk to the shops.
