Monthly night of new writing at Leith Depot, with six ten-minute plays by Edinburgh playwrights written for the night and read script-in-hand.
Penpal Productions bring another night of Drama@TheDepot to Leith Depot on Monday 2 November, from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. It's a monthly night of new writing, and this one follows the same format as the others: six ten-minute plays, all written exclusively for the night by Edinburgh playwrights. The whole thing is read script-in-hand in front of an audience, so you're hearing the work as it's being discovered rather than seeing a fully polished production.
What makes it work is how it's put together. The plays are rehearsed on the day with a director and actors, and then read through that same evening. It's a short window from page to performance, which keeps the energy raw and the focus on the writing itself. Each month the night takes on a new theme chosen by the audience, so the six plays will all be working around the same prompt, though they'll each take their own way into it.
Because the plays are written specifically for the night, you're seeing material that hasn't been staged anywhere else. It's a good way to catch a glimpse of what Edinburgh's playwrights are working on, and since there are six of them in one sitting, you get a fair spread of voices and styles in a single evening.

Tickets are general admission, starting at £7, and the night runs from 8:00pm to 10:00pm at Leith Depot, 138-142 Leith Walk. The organisers note that the night tends to sell out, so it's worth getting your tickets and your food orders at the bar sorted well in advance.
