Courtney Pine celebrates four decades in British jazz with his show Out of the Ghetto, blending the spiritual legacy of jazz with the pulse of reggae, soul, hip-hop and drum & bass.
Courtney Pine brings his show Out of the Ghetto: A Modern Day Jazz Story to The Queen's Hall on Thursday 19 November, part of a retrospective tour marking four decades in British jazz. Pine is a CBE, and the show is presented by the venue with support from Creative Scotland.
The set draws on three distinct points in his career. There's Journey to the Urge Within, his landmark debut; Modern Day Jazz Stories, which earned a Mercury nomination; and House of Legends, a more personal project. Together they trace the spiritual legacy of jazz, but they don't stop there — the music pulls in reggae, soul, hip-hop and drum & bass. It's a retrospective that looks back across forty years of his work rather than sticking to one era.
Along with those recordings, the night includes previously unreleased material, reimagined with the same energy that's come to define his live shows. The whole thing is framed as a look at the resilience, creativity and community that shaped his journey from London streets to international stages. He's often described as the musician who most fully embodies the transformation of the British jazz scene over the last four decades, and this tour is built around that.
