Paint and wine evening to recreate Joan Eardley's painting 'Snow' at Birchwood Art Studio.
Birchwood Art Studio is hosting a paint and wine evening on Saturday 28 November, built around Joan Eardley's Snow. The night is a workshop where you'll work towards your own version of that painting, with a glass of fizz or wine on the house to keep things easy. It's the kind of thing that works just as well if you've never picked up a brush as it does if you've been painting for years.
If you're not familiar with the studio, Birchwood is in Craiglockhart, at Ashley House, 1F Ashley Terrace, Edinburgh South EH11 1RF. It was started in 2020 by two friends, Clare and Sam, who set it up as 'one last hoolie' before they crumbled. Clare has since retired, leaving the creative dreamer Sam and the office team — Beth, Beata and Raphie — to keep it going. They're backed by a studio full of experienced, good-humoured artist tutors who share a pretty simple mission: to convince the world, or at least south Edinburgh, that anyone can draw, paint and make.
The studio takes its name from Sam's childhood home, the cottage of illustrator Jim Proudfoot, whose work you can find in the shop. That connection to a local artist sits well with the kind of thing they do here — taking a well-known piece like Eardley's Snow and breaking it down into something you can actually tackle over the course of an evening. Eardley is one of Scotland's most celebrated painters, and her snow scenes are a great place to start if you're new to it.
