Paint & Wine: Canal at Night a la Monet

Birchwood Art Studio is hosting a Paint & Wine evening on Saturday 7 November, with this session taking Canal at Night a la Monet as its starting point. It's one of their regular tutored nights: you turn up with a paintbrush in one hand and a glass in the other, and spend the evening painting in good company. You can come on your own or bring a friend, and the drinks are complimentary while you work.

The studio is in Craiglockhart, at Ashley House, 1F Ashley Terrace, Edinburgh South EH11 1RF. It was started back in 2020 by two friends, Clare and Sam, who wanted one last 'hoolie' before they crumbled. Clare has since retired, leaving the creative dreamer Sam and the studio team — Beth, Beata and Raphie — to keep things going. They're backed by a room full of experienced, good-humoured artist-tutors who share a simple mission: convincing the world, or at least south Edinburgh, that anyone can draw, paint and make.

The studio takes its name from Sam's childhood home, the beloved cottage of illustrator Jim Proudfoot, whose work you'll find in the shop. That connection to local art runs through the place, and the tutored sessions are designed to be accessible rather than intimidating. Whether you've never picked up a brush or you're just looking for a relaxed way to spend a Saturday night, the setup is the same: a guided session where you're encouraged to just get stuck in.
