Free exhibition of hundreds of artworks made by people with experience of mental health issues, in its 14th edition at Summerhall.
Out Of Sight Out Of Mind opens at Summerhall on Tuesday 20 October, running through to 8 November. It's the 14th edition of the exhibition, which brings together hundreds of artworks made by people with experience of mental health issues. This year, the whole show is focused in a single space, the War Memorial Gallery, with a day of events, an afternoon tea, and a slow release of hundreds more works throughout the run.
The work on display covers a lot of ground: photography, mixed media, sculpture, drawing, installation, painting, and film and video. The organisers describe the themes as ranging from the affecting and thought-provoking to the adult, the everyday and the awesome, so it's the kind of show where you'll find a wide variety of moods and subjects side by side. It forms part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, which is in its 20th year and has taken 'Reflections' as its theme.
There's a bit of history behind it too. Out Of Sight Out Of Mind is a CAPS Independent Advocacy project, run entirely by people with experience of mental health issues. It's been running since 2013, and its archive includes a specially commissioned film. Funding comes from the People's Postcode Lottery, the City of Edinburgh Local Events Open Fund, and a crowdfunder.
