Poet Malcolm Guite presents 'Galahad and the Grail' and previews his next Arthurian volume at the New College Festival of Books and Belief.
Malcolm Guite is at New College on Saturday 7 November, as part of the New College Festival of Books and Belief. He'll be presenting Galahad and the Grail, the first volume of his four-part series Merlin's Isle: An Arthuriad, which reimagines the legend of King Arthur for a new generation. The session is held in association with the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, so it sits right in that overlap between literature and the oral tradition.
Galahad and the Grail is a ballad journey, written in verse and illustrated with woodcuts by Stephen Crotts. It's the opening of a larger project that Guite describes as restoring the mystery, depth and theological imagination of the Arthurian tradition. The talk will give you a preview of the second volume, The Coming of Arthur, which returns to Tintagel to look at young Arthur's beginnings and his royal destiny. Both books are published by Canterbury Press this year.
The festival itself is run by the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, organised by Professor Alison Jack and Dr Lois McFarland. Now in its sixth edition, it's a festival of literature, religion and the imagination that brings together writers from the UK and beyond to explore the relationship between literature and belief. Guite's session is one of several that make up the programme.
