New Adventures bring back the 30th anniversary celebration of Matthew Bourne's Cinderella, a wartime romance set in London during the Second World War.
Matthew Bourne's Cinderella comes to the Festival Theatre from 4 to 8 May 2027, presented by New Adventures. It's a revival of one of the company's most popular productions, brought back as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations. The show first opened at London's Piccadilly Theatre on 26 September 1997, then made its US premiere at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles on 30 March 1999. It picked up the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance in 1998 and has toured widely since, including a Japanese premiere at the Tokyu Theatre Orb in 2018.
Bourne reimagines the fairytale in London in 1940. It's a wartime romance between Cinderella and a young RAF pilot, whose chance meeting leads to a magical night before they're parted by the horrors of the Blitz. The story trades the fairy godmother and glass slippers for the atmosphere of the Second World War, and the romance is set against the backdrop of a city under fire. It's a familiar tale shifted into a very different time and place, and the Blitz is what eventually pulls the two apart.
The production is set to Prokofiev's score, with Lez Brotherston's Olivier Award-winning designs, lighting by Neil Austin, video and projection by Duncan McLean, and sound design by Paul Groothuis. Critics have described it as fresh, vital, hilarious and stunningly original.
