The Martinů Quartet makes a rare visit as part of its 50th anniversary UK tour, performing works by Ravel, Martinů and Dvořák.
The Martinů String Quartet play The Queen's Hall on Monday 9 November, part of their 50th anniversary UK tour. It's a rare visit for them, and the concert sits within the New Town Concerts 2026/27 series.
The programme opens with Ravel's String Quartet in F Major, widely considered his first masterpiece. From there it moves to Martinů's own String Quartet No 2, written some twenty years later and already showing the composer's unique tonal colours and sensitivity to melodic beauty. It closes with Dvořák's String Quartet in A flat Major Op 105, an uplifting piece that reflects his joy on returning to his homeland from America.
The quartet itself is regarded as a leading light of the Czech quartet school. They've won numerous accolades and recording awards over the years, with Music Magazine HARMONIE calling them just that, and the Festspiele Europäische Wochen noting their 'breathtaking musicality' and 'flawless teamwork'. This tour marks half a century since the ensemble first formed, so it's a bit of a milestone performance.
