Over-18s folk night with Canadian duo Mama's Broke, who mix fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin.
Mama's Broke play The Voodoo Rooms on Sunday 31 January, with the set starting at 7:30 pm in The Speakeasy. They're a Canadian duo — Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria — who've spent more than a decade building a folk style that's carried across landscapes rather than tied to one place.
Their sound is built on close harmony and long hours of street playing, with the two of them juggling fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin, and adding traditional dance and foot percussion to the mix. The original compositions they write tend to lean dark, drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan and doom metal, and they describe their work as pushing the boundaries of tradition and the constraints of genre.

They've been recognised for it, too: their 2017 debut Count the Wicked won the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year, and Narrow Line (2022) earned them a JUNO nomination. The show is presented by 432 and is strictly for over-18s. Tickets are £16.00, and the night kicks off at 7:30 pm at The Speakeasy, inside The Voodoo Rooms at 19a West Register Street.
