Evening of public discussion led by political philosopher Dr Ben Sachs-Cobbe on how civic virtues can be brought into schools.
Making good citizens: instilling civic virtues in school is on at Augustine United Church on Monday 23 November, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. It's a talk about how civic virtues can be brought into schools, led by Dr Ben Sachs-Cobbe, a political philosopher at St Andrews University.
Sachs-Cobbe isn't coming at this from a purely theoretical place. He's a past leader of The Ethics Cup, a UK-wide schools competition that promotes good public discourse, and he'll be drawing on his experience with that to talk through how these virtues might actually work in a classroom. He'll be joined in conversation by two philosophers from the University of Edinburgh, Dr Aline Nardo and Dr Enrico Galvagni, so it's more of a discussion than a one-way lecture.
The evening is staged by The Albertus Institute, an Edinburgh-based forum that runs events as spaces for public discussion of topical issues. That's the context for the whole thing: it's a public conversation rather than a closed-door academic seminar, so it's open to anyone interested in how schools might shape the way young people engage with public life.
