Laurie Corlett-Donald launches his debut album Dunedin with a live show at The Voodoo Rooms, blending contemporary classical music with electronic ambient textures.
Laurie Corlett-Donald is playing The Voodoo Rooms on Thursday 12 November, where he'll be launching his debut album, Dunedin. It's a home-grown record in every sense: Corlett-Donald is an Edinburgh-based solo artist, and the album is a multimedia exploration of the city he grew up in, built around the feeling of wanting to leave and yet inevitably coming back.
The title didn't come from the music, though. For each track, local writers were asked to contribute a short story, given only the brief 'your connection to Edinburgh'. The album took its name from those stories rather than the other way around, so the songs sit alongside a collection of people's own versions of the city.
Corlett-Donald didn't start out as a solo act. He began playing in bands at nineteen, including Discopolis and Stillhound, touring and releasing three records before moving into solo production. He initially made club music under the moniker Trembler, but his sound shifted towards ambient textures and string arrangements, eventually becoming Dunedin. He describes his work as contemporary classical music with electronic ambient undertones, and live he goes 'off grid' as much as possible, blending analogue modular synths and piano with a string trio.
