High-energy traditional Scottish ceilidh night with live music from the HotScotch Ceilidh Band and a free beginners' class.
HotScotch Ceilidh Band are taking over Assembly Roxy on Saturday 21 November for a Laldie Ceilidh, one of those high-energy Scottish dancing nights that doesn't really ask you to be an expert to join in. Laldie Ceilidhs are organised by dancers for dancers, and they're built for all ages and abilities, so if you've never set foot on a ceilidh floor before, you're in the right place.
The night runs for about three hours of live music and dance-calling, and it opens with a free half-hour beginners' class. That's the bit that makes it easy to walk into: you can find your feet and get the basic steps sorted before the main ceilidh actually kicks off, rather than just hoping you'll pick it up on the fly. The organisers make a point of mixing beginners with experienced dancers on the floor, so you're not left standing on the sidelines while everyone else spins around you.
HotScotch Ceilidh Band provide the music throughout, and the whole thing is called by a caller who talks you through the dances as you go. It's traditional Scottish ceilidh, so expect the usual mix of reels and jigs that keep the energy high and the floor moving. The night is open to all ages, and since it's a Laldie event, it's designed to be as welcoming to first-timers as it is to people who've been dancing for years.

Doors open at 7.45pm, and the music runs from 8pm to 11pm. Tickets are between £11.25 and £21.25, and they're sold in separate allocations by the venue and by Eventbrite. Just a heads-up: the organisers take photos and video during the night for promotional use, so keep that in mind if you're the type who'd rather stay out of the shot. You'll find the night at Assembly Roxy, 2 Roxburgh Place, Edinburgh EH8 9SU.
