Alternative folk singer-songwriter Junior Brother, the pseudonym of Irish artist Ronan Kealy, plays a strictly over-18s headline show at The Voodoo Rooms.
Junior Brother returns to The Voodoo Rooms on Friday 6 November, playing a headline show in The Ballroom. It's a solo night, with the Irish singer-songwriter taking the full set himself.
Junior Brother is the stage name of Ronan Kealy, a singer-songwriter from Co. Kerry. He's built a following on live shows that people describe as both excitingly forward-looking and anciently evocative. He performs with an idiosyncratic guitar and foot-tambourine accompaniment, and he's as influenced by the avant-garde and medieval music as he is by his home in rural Ireland. That mix of the old and the experimental is a good way to get a sense of where he sits: alternative folk that doesn't stay in one place.
He's been on the radar for a while now. He was named one of RTĆ's Rising Irish Stars of 2018 and one of The Irish Times' contenders ready to break through in 2019. Since then, he's played venues like Vicar Street in Dublin, The Beacon Theatre in New York, and the Cork Opera House, and has supported the likes of The Proclaimers and Glen Hansard.
