Solo dance theatre piece by Alan Greig, with spoken-word monologues and choreographed vignettes on LGBTQ+ icons, identity and ageing, part of Innovations Dance Platform.
Alan Greig brings Within Reach to Summerhall on Friday 6 November, a 40-minute dance theatre piece he wrote and choreographed himself. It's part of Innovations Dance Platform, a showcase of new work by some of Scotland's most exciting early-career theatre-makers, though Greig himself is far from a newcomer.
On stage, he slips between characters to embody a string of LGBTQ+ icons: Quentin Crisp, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Tennessee Williams. The show blends eccentric spoken-word monologues with crisp choreographed vignettes, and the whole thing is a humorous look at identity, queer culture, ageing and the cracked glamour of fame. There's an explicit celebration of the older artist running through it, too.
Greig is a Scottish dancer, choreographer, movement director and mentor with a career spanning more than four decades; he's been teaching professionally since 1986 and still teaches at Dance Base and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He developed Within Reach in 2022, and it went out in 2023 through partnerships with Dance Base, Dance Ireland and Hidden Door.
