Short contemporary dance duet by EM+ inspired by Maurice Ravel's Boléro, in which two performers explore behaviour, touch and cooperation.
EM+ bring their short duet HOW TO_ just another Boléro to Summerhall on Thursday 5 November, as part of the Innovations Dance Platform. It's a half-hour piece that takes its title and its starting point from Maurice Ravel's Boléro, the one-movement orchestral work known for its steady, building rhythm. The two performers work within the confined space of a carpet, where eighteen ephemeral images merge in a suspended tempo. They're framed as domesticated animals in a zoo cage, and the work shifts between dramatic and ironic tones as a portrait of attempts to relearn how to behave, touch, cooperate and love.
EM+ is an independent choreographic project co-founded by Emanuele Rosa and Maria Focaraccio. Their collaboration began in 2020, though their artistic paths have intersected since 2008. Both come from classical and contemporary training, and they describe their work as blending a shared movement language with interdisciplinary collaboration across the European dance scene. HOW TO_ just another Boléro is a coproduction of SPACCA and S'ALA Produzione, with support from ATER Fondazione.
