A joyful dance-theatre work by Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda celebrating Black hair and the identity of Black and Mixed-Race girls.
Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda brings I Am Not My Hair to Lyra Artspace on Saturday 14 November, a dance-theatre work she created for Black and Mixed-Race girls aged 8-12 and their families. It's a joyful piece that draws on lived experience to celebrate Black hair, and it sits right in the middle of the pressures young people face to fit in and the power of embracing who they are. The whole thing makes room for identity to be honoured and individuality celebrated, so it's as much about the girls it's made for as it is about the hair itself.
There's a nice bit of local context to how it got here, too. The show is presented by Lyra, whose theatre programme is chosen and funded by its teenage Young Curators. They're the ones who pick the shows for young audiences and families in the Greater Craigmillar community, so this is a production that's been brought to the venue by the very age group it's aimed at. It's a bit of a full circle: the curators picking a show for young people, and the show itself being made for girls aged 8-12 and their families.
