Scottish Ballet's dramatic two-act reimagining of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's celebrated masterpiece Mayerling, set in Vienna in 1889.
Scottish Ballet bring The Scandal at Mayerling to the Festival Theatre from 22 to 24 April 2027. It's a two-act reimagining of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling, set in Vienna in 1889 around Crown Prince Rudolf and the tragedy at the Mayerling hunting lodge. Christopher Hampson CBE adapted it for the company, and it's billed as MacMillan's most dramatic ballet, following Rudolf's descent into despair and his intense connection with the young Mary Vetsera.
MacMillan's choreography is known for being demanding and visceral, and it's meant to push the dancers to their physical and emotional limits. Elin Steele's set and costume designs build a world of opulence and unease, and Franz Liszt's sweeping Romantic score is performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Gary Harris handles the staging and direction, with an original scenario by Gillian Freeman.
It's recommended for ages 15 and up, and there's a content warning for themes of suicide, addiction, coercive relationships, violence and mental distress. An audio described performance with a preceding touch tour rounds off the run.
