Guided walking tour led by Ruth Boreham through Edinburgh on the women who campaigned for the vote, from Randolph Place to the bottom of Calton Hill.
Give us the vote! Scottish women wanted it too is a walking tour through Edinburgh on Sunday 25 October, led by Ruth Boreham. It's a two-and-a-half-hour walk that reframes the suffrage movement, arguing that the story wasn't just about the Pankhursts and Fawcetts of London. Instead, it follows the women — and some of the men — who campaigned for and against the vote right here in Edinburgh, taking in mass meetings and even criminal acts.
Along the way, you'll hear about figures like Nannie Brown, Charlotte Despard, Priscilla and Duncan Bright, Elisa Stevenson, Chrystal Macmillan and Lucy Burns. The route runs through Randolph Place, Charlotte Square, the New Town and the Royal Scottish Academy, so you'll be crossing a good chunk of the city centre while the stories unfold. It's a proper walk, not a quick stroll, and it takes you past the very spots where these meetings and protests actually happened.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you sign up. The whole thing is entirely outdoors with no shelter, no toilet stops and very few seats along the way, so it's worth coming prepared for the weather and the distance. You don't need a printed ticket — a phone ticket will do. The tour starts at 10:30 AM at the meeting point outside The Usher Hall on Lothian Road (EH1 2EA) and finishes at the bottom of Calton Hill near Howies Restaurant, so you'll end up a fair distance from where you began. Tickets are £27.80, and the walk runs until 1:00 PM.
