Creative workshop with tutor Morven Ferguson to learn Gelli printing, for beginners to advanced makers, with prints to take home.
Birchwood Art Studio is running a Gelli Printing Workshop on Saturday 7 November, from 10am to 3.30pm. It's one of their tutored creative workshops, the kind aimed at anyone wanting to play with a new technique or refine their skills, from beginners right through to advanced. You'll be working with Morven Ferguson as your tutor, and you'll leave with a series of small, unique prints to make into cards or mount for display.
If you haven't come across it, gelli printing is a form of monoprinting using a gelatin plate. You roll paint onto the plate, layer on shapes or textures, and then press paper onto it to pull a print. Because you're working with a single plate, every print is a one-off, and you can keep layering and tweaking until you've got something you're happy with. It's a very tactile way of working, and since you're making a series of prints, you'll have plenty to take home.
Birchwood Art Studio is over in Craiglockhart, at Ashley House, 1F Ashley Terrace, Edinburgh South EH11 1RF. It was started in 2020 by two friends, Clare and Sam, who described it as one last 'hoolie' before they crumbled. After nearly five years, Clare retired, leaving the creative dreamer Sam and the office team — Beth, Beata and Raphie — plus a studio full of experienced, good-humoured artist tutors to carry on. The studio is named after Sam's childhood home, the beloved cottage of illustrator Jim Proudfoot, whose work you can find in the shop. Their whole mission is to convince the world, or at least south Edinburgh, that anyone can draw, paint and make.
