Gabriella Cilmi plays Cabaret Voltaire on Friday 20 November, one date in her autumn UK tour. The show starts at 19:00.
If you're coming to this one, it helps to know where Cilmi started. She's an Italian-Australian singer who was discovered at ten, signed at thirteen, and landed a worldwide hit at sixteen with 'Sweet About Me'. That early pop success is what most people associate her with, but the music she's been making since points in a different direction. Growing up in Melbourne, she was drawn to blues, soul and rock rather than pop, and she's cited Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen as influences.
That soulful, organic sound is what she returned to with Pure Love, which she recorded at Middle Farm, a studio near Dartmoor run by producer Peter Miles. She's described the record as a return to the kind of music she actually wanted to make, and it sits closer to those blues and soul roots than the pop she became known for as a teenager. Looking back on that early part of her career, she's said she wouldn't change the pop machine she went through, as it made her who she is.
