One-man alt-blues act Dan Turnbull, aka Funke and the Two Tone Baby, plays The Voodoo Rooms on the Greebling Tour 2027.
Funke and The Two Tone Baby are back at The Voodoo Rooms on Thursday 18 February, bringing their alt-blues and electro-rock set back to Edinburgh. The name is a pseudonym for Dan Turnbull, a Kent-based multi-instrumentalist who handles the whole thing himself on stage. It's a one-man band in the truest sense: he plays the instruments, provides the vocals, and loops the beats, so the sound you hear is all coming from one person.
That sound is a bit of a hybrid. He layers effects pedals, beatboxing and grooving bass lines over traditional instrumentation, and it's the combination that gives it its character. R2 Magazine described it as 'new, exciting and innovative music', and Sound of Confusion called it a 'distinctive and contemporary twist' on the blues. It's a mechanical alt-blues act, and that 'mechanical' part comes from how he builds the tracks live, layering one part on top of another until a full band's worth of sound fills the room.
It's a project that's grown quite a bit since it started. It began with pub gigs in Margate and has since expanded to more than 300 shows and festivals across the UK and Europe over the last two years. The Edinburgh date is part of the Greebling Tour 2027, so this is one stop on a wider run of shows.
