Free exhibition of contemporary hardwood furniture and handcrafting by two Scottish studios, Cairnwood Studio and Sundt Studios, at Leith Makers.
Forma | Lignum runs at Leith Makers from 4 to 15 November, bringing together two independent Scottish furniture studios, Cairnwood Studio and Sundt Studios, for a celebration of contemporary furniture and handcrafting. It's part of the Leith Makers events programme, so it's one of several things they've got on across the autumn.
Cairnwood Studio was founded by furniture maker Dina Halkett in East Lothian, and her work draws on weaving, origami and other craft disciplines to introduce unexpected details, textures and techniques. The exhibition shows hardwood furniture, intricate woven details and imaginative forms, and gives you the chance to meet the makers and hear the thinking behind the designs. Between Halkett's approach and that of Sundt Studios, the collection looks at material, form and traditional making techniques through two distinct ways of working with contemporary craft.
It's a good one to drop into if you're interested in how things are actually made. You'll see the finished pieces alongside the craft that goes into them, and because the makers are there, you can ask them about the process rather than just looking at the results. It's as much about the making as it is about the furniture.
