Exhibition of work by five artists commissioned in response to the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 20th year theme, exploring identity, motherhood, bullying and trauma.
Reflect, Reclaim, Reimagine opens at Summerhall on Tuesday 20 October, running through to Friday 30 October. It's an exhibition of new work by five artists — Kelly Zou, Mairi Timoney, Nat Ophelia Walpole, Steven Jones and Jasmine Esme — with additional work from Out of Sight Out of Mind. All five were commissioned to make new pieces in response to the theme of the 20th Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (SMHAF), which this year is 'Reflections'.
They work across a fair few different mediums, so you'll find textiles, mixed-media collage, painting, photography and sculpture all in the same space. The artists reflect on how identity, motherhood, bullying and trauma have shaped their mental health, and they've each included personal statements that go into the specifics: migration, postpartum motherhood, being trans, neurodiversity, disability and cPTSD. It's the kind of show where the work is tied closely to the artists' own lives, so the statements are as much a part of the exhibition as the art itself.
The show is part of the 20th Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, which is led by the Mental Health Foundation. It's an annual celebration of arts and mental health across Scotland, and this year it's partnering with Summerhall for a three-week programme of theatre, music, exhibitions and more. The festival as a whole is huge — more than 180 events including film, theatre, music, visual arts, writing, comedy and creative workshops — so if you're in town during this window, there's plenty more to see around the city besides this one gallery.
