Evening by the Edinburgh Student Surgical Society where students can network with surgeons from different specialties to explore surgical career paths.
The Edinburgh Student Surgical Society are running their ESSS Careers Roadshow on Thursday 26 November, an in-person evening at the Symposium Hall in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. It's a deep dive into surgical specialties, and the whole point is to get you in the room with surgeons from a range of different fields so you can figure out which one actually fits you.
If you're a medical student, you know the general shape of the surgical path, but the specifics of each specialty—the day-to-day, the training, the actual work—can be hard to pin down from a textbook or a lecture. This is where the roadshow comes in. It's set up as a networking evening, so you're not just sitting and listening; you'll be talking directly to surgeons who've already done it. You can ask the kind of questions that don't usually make it into a formal presentation: what a typical week looks like, the parts of the job that surprise people, and how the training actually plays out in practice.
The goal is to leave with a better handle on the different surgical career paths and how they're evolving, rather than just a vague idea of the options. It's a chance to compare a few specialties side by side in one evening and get a sense of where you might fit in.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Edinburgh and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.
