Multi-award-winning electronic folk band Elephant Sessions play the Usher Hall with fiddle player Euan Smillie.
Elephant Sessions headline Usher Hall on Saturday 19 December, presented by Regular Music. They're a multi-award-winning electronic folk band from the Highlands of Scotland, and this is a proper headline slot for them in one of the city's biggest rooms.
If you're not familiar with them, they describe their sound as a blend of folk, funk and electronica. It's a fair sum up: the folk is in the fiddle and mandolin, the funk in the bass and drums, and the electronica in the samples and beats that run through it all. Over the last decade they've grown from grassroots beginnings into one of the most prominent acts in contemporary folk, playing major festivals across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America — Glastonbury, WOMAD, Celtic Connections, Colours of Ostrava, SXSW and Byron Bay Bluesfest are among them. They've released four studio albums to date.
On stage it's a four-piece: Euan Smillie on fiddle, Alasdair Taylor on mandolin, Calum MacQuarrie on bass and Greg Barry on drums and samples. The fiddle and mandolin provide the melodic, folk-rooted lead, while the bass and drums hold down the groove, with Barry's samples adding the electronic textures that give them their name. It's a live band, and the set is built around that interaction between the acoustic instruments and the electronic elements.
