Charity fundraiser in which participants walk barefoot across red-hot embers to raise money for Scotland's LGBTQ+ community.
LGBT Health and Wellbeing are holding their first-ever firewalk at The Grange Cricket Club on Thursday 29 October, from 17:45 to 21:00. It's a charity fundraiser, and the main event is exactly what it sounds like: participants walk barefoot across two metres of red-hot embers to raise money for Scotland's LGBTQ+ community.
It's framed as a challenge of courage and confidence, and there's a bit more to it than just the walk itself. Before anyone steps onto the embers, they sit in a 90-minute mindset and courage workshop, where they talk about how fear works and how to get past it. The whole thing is run by LGBT Health and Wellbeing, and the charity's chief executive, Mark, and its chair, Yor, have both signed up to take on the challenge themselves.
There's a particular reason they've gone with this. The organisation points out that LGBTQ+ people across Scotland can experience fear simply for being their authentic selves, and the firewalk is meant to turn that fear into a tool for supporting others. It's a way of taking something that often feels out of your control and using it for something positive.
