Self-guided audio tour by AudaTours that runs across thirteen landmarks on the Royal Mile, with historical stories recorded by guides.
AudaTours are running Underground Echoes and City Secrets, a self-guided audio tour of Edinburgh, on Saturday 12 December from 12:00 to 20:00. It starts at The Scotsman Hotel, 20 North Bridge Road, EH1 1TR, and takes you beneath the cobblestones of the Royal Mile, where the cries of rebellion, sermons and secret agreements are said to still echo.
The route runs for around 2.0 km across thirteen landmarks, including St Giles' Cathedral, the Old College at Edinburgh University and St Cecilia's Hall. It works entirely offline on your own phone once downloaded, with up to 33 minutes of narration and no in-person guide or building entry. Rather than dry commentary, the audio is recorded by guides who lean on verified historical stories to bring the city's scandals and forgotten moments to life: the conflict that simmered at St Giles', a lost secret said to be hidden in the university courtyard's stone, and a concert at St Cecilia's Hall whose wrong note turned into a political quarrel. The whole takes about an hour and two minutes at your own pace.
Because it's self-guided, you can stop and linger where you like or push through the landmarks in one go. The offline setup means you won't be relying on signal as you move through the city, and the 33 minutes of narration are spread across the thirteen stops rather than delivered all at once. It's a walking tour, so you'll be out on the streets for the full distance.
