A spoken word event where writers, poets and members of the public respond to the themes and images of the Dîdâr exhibition through live readings.
Summerhall Writers take over the Lab Gallery at Summerhall on Sunday 18 October, for a spoken word evening that grew out of the exhibition Dîdâr: I am the feather and the bird is the precipice. The exhibition itself is a series of fine art photographs by Franco-Iranian photographer XEDER, created in collaboration with artist Alex Rigg, with further contributions from Danna Sim, Topaz Pauls and Suzi Cunningham.
Over the course of the show, writers, poets and members of the public were invited to respond to the images and to the exhibition's themes — encounter, identity, memory, distance, belonging and connection — using the photographs as prompts for stories, memories, questions and new ways of seeing. Those contributions have been gathered into a publication that accompanies the exhibition, and for one night they're brought to life through live readings, with the poetry and prose entering into dialogue with the photographs.
If you want to see the work before the readings, the exhibition runs from 9 to 18 October at the Lab Gallery, free and open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, with a content warning for nudity. The spoken word event is the final chapter of the run, bringing together the written responses that the photographs sparked over the preceding week.
