The Perfume Studio in Edinburgh is running its Design Your Own Perfume Gold Experience on Monday 26 October, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a couple of hours spent making your own scent from scratch. If you've ever wondered how perfume is actually put together, this is a good way to see it without needing a chemistry degree.
The session starts with a perfume stylist taking you through a journey of perfume discovery, which is basically a guided introduction to how different notes work and how to build a fragrance. From there, you get to compose your own scent from a choice of 24 blends, including jasmine, vanilla and various spices. You're not just picking a pre-made scent and bottling it; you're choosing the elements that go into it, so the final result is something you've actually had a hand in.
The whole thing runs for up to two hours in a group of around 30 people, and you leave with a 5ml bottle of your creation, an e-certificate of authenticity and your perfume registered under whatever name you choose for it. Under-16s are welcome as long as they're accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, and a complimentary glass of bubbly is served at selected locations. If you want to go further, the studio also offers a more extensive Platinum Experience and the option to buy additional atomisers at an extra cost.
