Artist-led Day of the Dead craft workshop at Sundial Cafe where visitors make a sugar skull.
Sundial Cafe is hosting a Day of the Dead crafts workshop on Sunday 1 November, starting at 4:00 PM. It's a hands-on afternoon built around Día de los Muertos, the traditional Mexican holiday that honours the Day of the Dead, and it's designed as a making session rather than just a talk.
The afternoon is led by artists who'll guide you through the process, so you don't need to arrive with any particular skill set. There are workshops to get stuck into, exhibits to look around, and you'll leave with your own sugar skull — the holiday's most recognisable symbol — to take home. It's the kind of thing that works as well on its own as it does as a slow Sunday afternoon activity.
If you're not familiar with the holiday, it's a good place to start. Día de los Muertos is about remembering and celebrating those who've passed, and the sugar skull is right at the heart of that tradition. The workshop takes that idea and turns it into something you actually make yourself, so you get a bit of the story along with the craft.
