A Utopia Theatre and Sheffield Theatres production of Crown of Blood, a Yoruba reimagining of Macbeth set in 19th-century Yorubaland.
Crown of Blood runs at the King's Theatre from Wednesday 3 March to Saturday 6 March 2027. It's a Yoruba reimagining of Macbeth set in 19th-century Yorubaland, a Utopia Theatre and Sheffield Theatres production adapted by Oladipo Agboluaje and directed by Mojisola Kareem. Deyemi Okanlawon takes the lead as Aderemi.
The story follows General Aderemi of West Africa, who's promoted to Field Marshall after a victory on the battlefield. An oracle's prophecy tells him he'll become King, and from there he and his wife Oyebisi set out on a bloody mission to seize the throne. It's Shakespeare's classic tale of revenge, ambition and deception, but dressed in Yoruba cultural heritage and spirituality, which come through in the storytelling, the music and the movement. The production was developed with the support of the National Theatre's Generate Programme.
