Play by Jessica Swale about four women at Girton College, Cambridge, fighting for the right to graduate, performed by Edinburgh Napier University students.
Blue Stockings, Jessica Swale's debut play, runs from Wednesday 4 November to Saturday 7 November at the B56 Studio Theatre on Edinburgh Napier University's Merchiston Campus. It's performed by fourth-year BA (Hons) Acting and English students at the university, so you're seeing it as a student production rather than a professional company.
The play is set in 1896 at Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. It follows four first-year students, led by Tess Moffat, who study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade, only to be denied degrees and branded 'blue stockings' — an unnatural, educated woman — when the men graduate. Determined to win the right to graduate, they face the distractions of love, the cruelty of the class divide and the strength of the opposition over one tumultuous academic year. It's billed as a moving, comical and eye-opening story of young women fighting for education and self-determination, and it plays out against the backdrop of the women's suffrage movement.
Because it's a student production, the cast is made up of students from the Acting and English courses, so you'll see them working across both disciplines on the same stage. The run is short, four nights in total, and the performances are in the evenings.
