Full-size print of the Bayeux Tapestry unrolled across Dovecot's Balcony Gallery, marking its historic loan to the UK.
Bayeux On The Balcony opens at Dovecot Studios on Saturday 21 November, and it's the first time you'll be able to see the scale of the Bayeux Tapestry here in Scotland. They've taken a full-size print of the whole thing and unrolled it across the length and breadth of the Balcony Gallery, so you can actually walk along it and take in the full story rather than seeing it in fragments.
It's part of a bigger moment: the French government has loaned the original Tapestry to the UK, and this display is part of Bayeux Around Britain, a nationwide programme of exhibitions, events and displays that shares the loan with audiences across the country, supported by WorldQuant. The whole thing runs from 21 November 2026 right through to 9 April 2027, so there's plenty of time to fit it in.
What makes this more than just a print on a wall is how they've framed it. The focus is on the Tapestry's legacy for contemporary artists, designers and makers. You'll find expert interpretation from the British Museum sitting alongside insights from Dovecot's own world-class weavers and community embroiderers, who compare medieval textile storytelling with modern fine art tapestry. It's a nice way of bridging the gap between a thousand-year-old piece of embroidery and the work still happening in the studios today. Every ticket sold supports the work of The Dovecot Foundation to advance visual art, craft and design.
