Stephen Daldry's award-winning National Theatre production of J.B. Priestley's thriller about the Birling family, suitable for ages 11 and over.
An Inspector Calls comes to the King's Theatre from Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 November 2027, with evening performances at 7.30pm and matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm. It's Stephen Daldry's National Theatre production of JB Priestley's classic thriller, which has picked up 19 major awards and played to more than 5 million people worldwide.
The story is one most of us know from school: the prosperous Birling family are sitting down to a peaceful dinner party when Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly. He's there to investigate the death of a young woman, and as he works his way through the room, he pulls out revelations that shake the foundations of their lives. It's a tight, claustrophobic piece of writing that works best when the tension builds in real time.
This particular production has been around for a while, and the 19 awards it's collected since its National Theatre run give you a good idea of the scale it's worked on. It's a well-travelled version of the play, so it arrives in Edinburgh with a fair bit of history behind it.
