A funny and heartfelt drama following three ice skating instructors in the aftermath of a freak accident.
Zamboni opens at Assembly Roxy on Wednesday 11 November, and it runs through to Sunday 15 November. It's a new play from A Play, A Pie and a Pint, produced at Γran MΓ³r and co-presented with Assembly Theatre, and it marks the company's return to the Roxy.
Written by Lex Joyce and directed by Anna Whealing, Zamboni is a funny, existential dramedy about friendship, trauma and the fear of one's own passion. It follows three ice-skating instructors β Donal, Noa and Gus β whose safe haven at their local ice rink is shattered after they witness a horrific accident on shift. From there, the very thing they love becomes the thing they're afraid of. It's the kind of story that starts with a specific, recognisable world and then pulls the rug out from under it, and the title itself points to the rink setting that holds it all together.
There's a content warning for graphic description of an accident, so it's worth keeping in mind if you're sensitive to that sort of thing. Beyond that, it's described as a funny and heartfelt drama, and the 'dramedy' label fits the way it balances the lighter side of friendship with the heavier fallout of what happens on that rink.
