Dark comic drama by Rob Drummond about three women and three dead husbands, from the A Play, A Pie and A Pint series at the Assembly Roxy.
Dead Husbands Club runs at Assembly Roxy from 2nd December to 6th December, the latest addition to the A Play, A Pie and A Pint series. It's a new dark comic drama by Rob Drummond, directed by Cora Bissett, and it's being co-presented by Aberdeen Performing Arts and Assembly Theatre.
If the tagline tells you anything, it's that this isn't a quiet night in. The show is billed as 'Three women. Three dead husbands. One notorious serial killer!', and from there it works its way into the heavier stuff: blame, responsibility, and the stories people tell themselves to live with loss. It's a dark comedy, so it'll find the laugh in the middle of the wreckage, but the core of it is about how people survive when the thing they've lost is tied up in something far worse than they expected.
It's part of the A Play, A Pie and A Pint format, which started at Òran Mór in Glasgow and has become a bit of a staple for new writing—the idea is simple: a play, a pie, and a pint, all in one go. This isn't a one-off, either. The company is bringing other plays from the same series to the Assembly Roxy around the same time, so if you're in the mood for a few nights of theatre, you can double up. There's Zamboni, which follows three ice skating instructors in the aftermath of a freak accident, and Making Way, a comic and poignant take on the vampire myth.
