Broadway musical about a waitress who finds courage and a fresh start through her baking, inspired by the beloved film.
Waitress plays the Buell Theatre from November 27 to 29, 2026, as part of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts at 14th and Curtis in downtown Denver's Arts Complex. It's a Broadway musical based on the film, and the story is set in a small town. It follows Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of escaping her rocky marriage. She bakes desserts that mirror her turbulent life—pies like 'The Key (Lime) to Happiness' and 'Betrayed By My Eggs'—until a baking contest and a new romance offer her a fresh start. The production is billed as an uplifting celebration of friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.
Behind the show are some big names you might recognize. The music and lyrics are by Sara Bareilles, with a book by Jessie Nelson, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and direction by Diane Paulus. It was a Broadway hit that earned a Tony nomination for Best Musical in 2016, and the Chicago Tribune called it 'sweet, sassy and passionate' and 'an empowering musical of the highest order.'
