An immersive exhibition exploring the relationship between abstract visual art and sound, marking the 15th anniversary of the Clyfford Still Museum.
Still in Sound is running at the Clyfford Still Museum through February 14, 2027. It opened on May 16, 2026, and marks the museum's 15th anniversary. The exhibition is co-curated by Bailey Placzek, the museum's curator of collections, and Ben Coleman, a British multidisciplinary artist. Together they're asking how you might experience abstract visual language through sound.
Here's how it works: five guest artists spent short residencies at the museum, each picking one abstract work by Clyfford Still and composing an original sound-based piece in response. Those five compositions set the tone for each of the museum's largest galleries. Placzek then filled those rooms with other Still works that resonate with that mood, while Coleman arranged the drifting sound into a holistic, immersive experience. If you want more context, there's a digital guide on Bloomberg Connects with full recordings of each sonic interpretation, artist biographies, and behind-the-scenes interviews.
It's a good chance to see Still's work in a different light. The museum houses nearly everything he created—about 3,125 pieces, which is 93% of his life's work—so there's a lot to pull from. If you're sensitive to sound, there are quiet hours without soundscapes from 10 to 11 AM on the first Saturday and the third Wednesday of each month, and noise-cancelling headphones are available on loan.
