An exhibition exploring the surprising connections between nature, science and myth through models, cultural objects, fossils and hands-on experiences.
Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids opens at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science on Friday, Oct. 16, after a member-only preview on Thursday, Oct. 15. It runs through Sunday, April 4, 2027, so you've got plenty of time to fit it in over the winter.
The exhibition is organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, in collaboration with the Australian National Maritime Museum, the Canadian Museum of History, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, and The Field Museum. It's presented in English with a Spanish audio guide available.
Inside, the show puts models, cultural objects, fossils, and hands-on experiences side by side to trace the connections between nature, science, and myth. You'll come face-to-face with a 17-foot-long dragon, walk among the tentacles of an enormous kraken, and meet a unicorn and a griffin. There's a replica of the infamous 'Feejee mermaid' made famous by P. T. Barnum, and a cast skull of a Gigantopithecus, an extinct ape linked to legends of humanlike creatures. You can also compare dragon traditions from around the world and create your own mythic creature through interactive activities.
