21+ night of cumbia, Latin folk and electrocumbia with Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Fruko y sus Tesos and Carmelo Torres y su Cumbia Sabanera.
Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Fruko, and Carmelo Torres play Ophelia's Electric Soapbox on Friday, November 6, as part of the Madre Cumbia show. It's a three-act Colombian cumbia night that brings together three very different corners of the country's music: the traditional folk of the Caribbean coast, the salsa-driven sound of Medellín, and the cumbia of the Sabana region.
Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto are the traditional anchor of the bill. They're a folkloric cumbia group from Colombia's Caribbean region that's been active since the 1940s, and they took home a Latin Grammy for Best Folkloric Album in 2007 for Un Fuego de Sangre Pura. Fruko, born in Medellín, is a salsa pioneer who founded Fruko y sus Tesos; he's arranged more than 10,000 songs and has played Madison Square Garden. Carmelo Torres leads his own group, Carmelo Torres y su Cumbia Sabanera. Together, the night runs through cumbia, Latin folk, Colombian rock, and electrocumbia.
