Dallas Symphony youth concert with Shira Samuels-Shragg conducting music from around the world, designed for students in grades PreK-6.
Postcards from Around the World comes to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Wednesday, October 28, and Thursday, October 29. It's one of two youth concert programs the Dallas Symphony Orchestra puts on each season for students in grades PreK-6, and it usually brings in more than 10,000 kids and teachers from across the Dallas/Fort Worth area every year. The whole thing is built as a musical journey across the continents, with each piece chosen to capture the sounds, rhythms, and traditions of a different place around the globe.
Conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg leads the orchestra through a program that jumps from the familiar to the less so. You'll hear the finale of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor and the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor—two of the most recognizable pieces in the classical canon. Alongside them are Reena Esmail's Ram Tori Maya, Arturo Márquez's Danzón No. 2, and the scherzo from Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 in A minor (the Scottish). The traditional Flowers in Spring and Katie Jenkins' Transatlantic Voyage round out the set.

Because it's a youth concert, the scheduling is built for school trips. There are sessions at 10 AM and 11:30 AM on both Wednesday and Thursday, so you've got four different slots to choose from across the two days. Tickets start at $25, and there are special rates for groups. If you're bringing a class or a whole school, those group rates are where you'll want to look.
